Few summer concert traditions feel quite like a Dave Matthews Band show.
Tonight, DMB returns to Western New York as the band takes over Darien Lake Amphitheater for another night of sprawling jams, deep cuts, fan favorites and the kind of setlist that nobody can completely predict before the first note is played.
More than three decades into their career, Dave Matthews Band remains one of the most successful and enduring live acts in American music. But the reason fans continue following the band from city to city goes beyond nostalgia.
Every night can be different.
Songs are stretched, rearranged and allowed to take unexpected turns onstage. A track that lasts five minutes on an album can become something entirely different in concert, while songs that haven’t appeared in a set for weeks — or sometimes much longer — can suddenly return without warning.
That unpredictability is part of the experience.
With a catalog that includes “Crash Into Me,” “Ants Marching,” “The Space Between,” “Grey Street,” “Satellite,” “What Would You Say,” “Don’t Drink the Water” and countless fan-favorite deep cuts, there are plenty of possibilities for tonight’s set.
But trying to predict exactly what DMB will play?
Good luck.
Dave Matthews and company have built their reputation on musicianship, improvisation and allowing the energy of each particular night to dictate where the show goes.
For the longtime fans filling the pavilion and lawn tonight, that’s exactly the point.
