If you grew up with 2000s R&B and hip-hop dominating your radio, your burned CDs and your playlists, tonight’s show at Darien Lake might feel like stepping straight back into that era.
NE-YO and Akon bring the Nights Like This Tour to Darien Lake Amphitheater tonight, putting two artists responsible for an almost ridiculous number of 2000s hits together on the same stage.
For NE-YO, the catalog runs deep.
From “So Sick” and “Sexy Love” to “Miss Independent,” “Closer” and “Because of You,” NE-YO helped define the sound of mainstream R&B throughout the decade — both behind the microphone and as a songwriter responsible for hits far beyond his own albums.
Then there’s Akon.
The second you hear that unmistakable voice, you’re back in the 2000s.
“Smack That.” “I Wanna Love You.” “Don’t Matter.” “Right Now (Na Na Na).” “Beautiful.” “Locked Up.”
Akon’s combination of R&B, hip-hop and pop made him practically unavoidable during his peak, and hearing those songs inside an amphitheater full of people who grew up with them should turn tonight into one massive singalong.
That’s really what makes the Nights Like This Tour such an interesting pairing.
This isn’t simply two artists sharing a bill.
It’s two catalogs that existed side-by-side during an era when R&B and hip-hop completely dominated popular culture.

Tonight isn’t about discovering what’s next.
It’s about turning the clock back about 20 years, hearing the opening notes of songs you haven’t thought about in forever and somehow still knowing every single word.
Western New York, get ready.
Tonight is going to sound a lot like 2006.
