THE FLAMING LIPS: Pink Robots invade Art Park

Things got a little trippy last night, as THE FLAMING LIPS took over Art Park with a barrage of sound and colour. Playing the iconic 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Wayne Coyne led the band through a routine of transcendental classics accompanied by mind-blowing effects.

As massive, robot inflatables danced along, a barrage of balloons, beach balls and confetti pelted the audience, while laser lights pierced the night sky. But the show didn’t stop there, as Coyne grooved his way through the setlist several outfits and environmental changes took place. Whether it was Coyne dressed up as a flower or a pair of lips in a giant face, there was always something going on at all times.

Splitting the performance into two sections Coyne and the band played through the full 2002 album, along with some of their other hits. The warm, mild weather held up and the audiences of almost 4,000 seemed to enjoy the spectacle thoroughly. If not, they were at least compensated in the bucket loads of souvenier confetti they were showered in.
